What is the FSC code (Freischaltcode)?

The FSC code, short for Freischaltcode (German for ‘activation code’), is a 20-character alphanumeric code generated specifically for your car from its VIN. Without this code, the BMW navigation unit will not accept or install new maps. In practice, the maps can sit on a USB stick, but only the correct FSC code activates them on your car’s system. Because it is tied to the VIN, the FSC code is unique to each vehicle and cannot be copied from another car.

Compatible maps and navigation units

FSC activation and BMW map packages vary depending on the navigation unit fitted to your vehicle. We cover the USB-updatable generations, from CIC through to MGU with iDrive 7 (not the older CCC and M-ASK DVD systems):

For older units such as CIC, CHAMP2/Business, EntryNav, NBT and NBT EVO ID4, activation is usually completed with a typed FSC code entered directly in the car. For newer units such as NBT EVO ID5/ID6, EntryNav2 and MGU, activation uses an FSC file copied into the correct folder on the USB stick. Older units take a FAT32 USB stick (NBT EVO ID4 needs a 64 GB stick), and newer units an exFAT stick; your installation guide explains how to prepare it. There are two types of FSC code. A Lifetime FSC code lets you update the maps as often as you like for the life of the car — including future versions, without paying again. A One-Time FSC code is valid for a single update only. We supply a Lifetime FSC code on typed-code units wherever the unit supports it, so your maps can stay up to date for the long term.
