Three ways to check a BMW's service history

Most BMWs built from around 2009 onwards have a digital service history instead of a stamped paper book. That record can be read in three places: inside the car, at a BMW retailer, or online using the VIN. Which one suits you depends on whether you own the car or are thinking of buying it.

  • iDrive: free, for anyone sitting in the car
  • BMW retailer: free, usually for the registered keeper
  • Online by VIN: £19 report, no car or V5C needed
  • All three draw on BMW's digital service record

Easier than ever

Checking a car’s records? Just type the VIN.

We have made it easier than ever to look up a BMW or MINI. Type the VIN into the search box at the top of this page and we will show what is available for that car before you order anything.

Type the VIN

Method 1: BMW iDrive service history (free, in the car)

If you can sit in the car, iDrive is the quickest free option. On most recent BMWs the path looks like this:

1
Menu

Press the menu button on the iDrive controller, or tap Menu on the touchscreen.

2
My Vehicle → Vehicle Status

Open the vehicle section and choose the vehicle status screen.

3
Service Requirements

This lists upcoming items such as oil, brakes and vehicle check, with due dates or distances.

4
Service History

Shows the services recorded for the car, typically with date, mileage and type of service.

The wording varies by iDrive version. Older systems use labels such as Vehicle Info, and the newest versions may group these screens differently. The in-car screen gives a summary of each visit, not the detailed workshop record, and it only shows what has been recorded for that car.

Method 2: ask a BMW UK retailer

A BMW retailer in the UK can usually look up the car's service record on BMW's system. Take the VIN (or the registration) and the V5C logbook so they can confirm you are the registered keeper. Many retailers will talk you through the entries or print a summary; some may give more detail on work carried out at their own site.

Retailers generally share the record with the keeper rather than with prospective buyers, so if you are viewing a used car you may need the seller to ask on your behalf. BMW UK customer services can also help owners with questions about their car's record.

Method 3: check BMW service history online by VIN

If you do not have the car or the V5C to hand, for example when you are comparing adverts, you can check BMW service history online with our report. You only need the VIN.

1

Enter the VIN

Use the full 17-character VIN or the last 7 characters in the form above.

2

Free identification

We confirm the model, series and production date, and how many service entries were found.

Report by email

After payment, the report is sent to your email as a secure link.

The report lists dealer service entries, repairs, key reads and recorded mileage entries in km, plus the factory equipment. It is based on BMW dealer network records, so work done elsewhere may not appear.

What is BMW digital service history?

BMW digital service history, also called electronic service history, replaced the stamped paper service book on most models from around 2009, although the exact changeover varied by model and market. Instead of a stamp, each service carried out by a BMW retailer or authorised repairer is recorded centrally against the car's VIN.

Because the record is stored centrally rather than in a booklet, it cannot be lost with the paperwork, and it is harder to fake than a stamp. It also means that a missing paper book is not necessarily a problem on a newer BMW. The record is only as complete as the entries made, though, so gaps can still appear.

What to check before buying a used BMW in the UK

Whichever method you use, read the history with the advert and the car in front of you. These are the things worth checking:

  • Mileage rises consistently between entries
  • No long gaps in time or distance
  • Time-based items such as brake fluid are not overdue
  • The same repair does not keep coming back
  • The latest recorded mileage fits the odometer
  • The VIN matches the car and the V5C

Recorded mileage that goes backwards, or a big drop between visits, needs a clear explanation before you buy. Our report shows mileage in km, so convert before comparing it with a UK odometer in miles (1 mile is about 1.61 km). You can also compare the figures with the MOT mileage on the GOV.UK MOT history service. A history check is a useful filter, but it does not replace an inspection by someone who knows BMWs.

Independent garages and BMW digital service history

Plenty of BMWs are serviced by independent specialists, and that is not a bad thing in itself. Some independents can add entries to BMW's digital service record, but many cannot, and those may only reset the service indicator and give you a paper invoice.

So if the digital record shows a gap, ask the seller for the invoices from that period. Itemised receipts from a reputable garage are good evidence of maintenance, even if they never appear in BMW's system. For a car with a mixed history, combine the BMW service history report with the paperwork to get the full picture. See BMW digital service history explained for why entries go missing, or our MINI service history check for a MINI. To check for open recalls, see our BMW recall check guide.

To confirm exactly which model, series and build you are looking at, try our free BMW VIN decoder. The same VIN also tells us which head unit the car has if you later want a BMW sat nav update or Apple CarPlay activation, and you can contact us with any questions about a report.

BMW service history FAQ

Can I check BMW service history online for free?

If you own the car, the free options are the service history screen in iDrive and asking a BMW retailer. Online by VIN, our free check identifies the car and tells you how many dealer service entries were found; the entries themselves, with dates, mileage and work carried out, are in the £19 report.

Does the My BMW app show service history?

Not as a full record. BMW UK says past electronic service history is viewed in the vehicle through iDrive rather than in the My BMW app, which focuses on upcoming service requirements and booking. App features can change with updates, so check the current version if you are unsure.

How do I see BMW service history in iDrive?

On most recent BMWs, go to Menu, then My Vehicle, Vehicle Status, Service Requirements and Service History. The labels differ between iDrive versions, so on older cars look for the vehicle information or vehicle status screens instead.

What does a BMW service history check show?

Our BMW service history report shows dealer service entries, repairs, key reads and recorded mileage entries in km, along with the factory equipment and vehicle identification details. Content depends on the records available for each VIN.

Can I check BMW service history without the V5C?

Yes, online. Our report only needs the VIN, which is useful when you are viewing a car you do not own yet. A BMW retailer will usually ask for the V5C, or other proof that you are the keeper, before sharing the record.

Does BMW digital service history include independent garages?

Sometimes. Some independent specialists can add entries to BMW's digital record and many cannot, so work done outside the BMW network may only be documented on paper invoices. Ask the seller for receipts to fill any gaps.

How quickly will I receive the report?

The report is prepared after successful payment and sent to your email as a secure link, so you can read it online straight away.

Does the report include MOT, finance or write-off data?

No. The report covers BMW dealer service, repair and key-read history only. For MOT results and recorded MOT mileage, use the official GOV.UK MOT history service.
