What is BMW digital service history?
BMW digital service history, also called electronic service history, replaced the stamped paper service book on most BMWs from around 2009, although the exact changeover varied by model and market. Each service carried out by a BMW retailer or authorised repairer is recorded against the car's VIN, typically with the date, the mileage and the type of service.
- Stored against the VIN, not in a booklet
- Date and mileage for each entry
- Readable in iDrive, at a retailer or by VIN
- Cannot be lost with the paperwork
Easier than ever
Checking a car’s records? Just type the VIN.
We have made it easier than ever to look up a BMW or MINI. Type the VIN into the search box at the top of this page and we will show what is available for that car before you order anything.
What the record shows (and what it doesn't)
The record shows the services and work entered by the BMW network: routine services, inspections and many repairs, with the mileage at each visit. Our report also includes key reads and the factory equipment, which helps confirm the car is what the advert says.
It does not show MOT results, finance, insurance write-offs or work by garages that cannot add to BMW's record. For MOT results and the mileage recorded at each test, use the official GOV.UK MOT history service.
Why services go missing from BMW service history
A gap in the record is common and does not automatically mean the car was neglected. These are the usual reasons:
- Serviced by an independent garage
- Entry not completed at the time
- Older car with a paper book only
- Screen in the car not in step with the record
Many independent specialists cannot add entries to BMW's record, so their services may only exist as paper invoices. Occasionally an entry is not completed or transmitted when the car is serviced. The service screen in iDrive is a summary for the car itself and can differ from the central record. If your car's history looks incomplete, a BMW retailer can usually check the central record for the registered keeper.

BMW digital service history FAQ
What is BMW digital service history?
It is BMW's electronic service record. Instead of a stamp in a paper book, each service carried out by a BMW retailer or authorised repairer is recorded against the car's VIN, along with the date and mileage. It is also called BMW electronic service history.
Why is a service missing from my BMW service history?
The most common reason is that the work was done by an independent garage that cannot add entries to BMW's record. Other causes are an entry that was not completed when the car was serviced, or a car old enough to have only a paper book.
Why does iDrive show different history to the dealer?
The screen in the car shows a summary of the services recorded for it, while a BMW retailer looks at the central record. They normally match, but they can differ, for example if an entry was not transmitted at the time of the service.
Can I check BMW digital service history by VIN?
Yes. Enter the full VIN or the last 7 characters above. The free check identifies the car and shows how many dealer service entries were found, and the £19 report lists them with dates, mileage and work carried out.
Is BMW digital service history as good as a stamped book?
In most ways it is better: it cannot be lost with the paperwork and is harder to fake. It is only as complete as the entries made, though, so check invoices for any work done outside the BMW network.
Can independent garages add to BMW digital service history?
Some can and many cannot. If a car was serviced independently, itemised invoices from a reputable garage are good evidence of maintenance even if the services never appear in BMW's record.
