What the BMW VIN decoder shows

Enter a VIN and our BMW VIN decoder checks it against BMW data to confirm exactly which car you are looking at. It is a quick way to make sure an advert, a V5C and the car in front of you all describe the same vehicle. The free result shows:

  • Vehicle model
  • Series
  • Production date
  • Full 17-character VIN and short VIN
  • Number of BMW dealer service entries found
  • Number of factory equipment items detected

The detailed records stay in the full report: the individual service entries, repairs, key reads, recorded mileage in km and the complete factory equipment list with option codes. If the decoder finds service entries, that is a good sign there is history worth reading before you buy.

BMW VIN structure explained

Every BMW and MINI built for the road carries a 17-character Vehicle Identification Number. It follows the international ISO 3779 layout, split into three parts. The letters I, O and Q are never used, so they cannot be mistaken for 1 and 0.

Characters 1–3WMI

World Manufacturer Identifier: who built the car and where the manufacturer is registered.

Characters 4–9VDS

Vehicle Descriptor Section: BMW's own codes for the model, body and engine variant.

Characters 10–17VIS

Vehicle Identifier Section: the individual car. The last 7 characters are the serial number BMW uses as the short VIN.

Common BMW Group manufacturer codes include WBA (BMW cars), WBS (BMW M models) and WMW (MINI). You may also see other BMW Group prefixes such as WBX or WBY on some models, and cars built outside Germany can carry a different code again.

In North America the 10th character encodes the model year and the 9th is a check digit, but European-market VINs do not have to follow those rules. That is why reading the characters by hand only gets you so far: to confirm the exact model, build date and equipment of a UK car, the VIN needs to be matched against BMW's own data, which is what the decoder does.

Where to find your BMW VIN on a UK car

1
V5C logbook

Printed on the registration certificate as the VIN/chassis/frame number (section E).

2
Base of the windscreen

A small plate visible from outside the car, at the bottom edge of the windscreen.

3
Door frame (B-pillar) sticker

Open the front door and look for the label on the door jamb or B-pillar.

4
iDrive vehicle information

On many iDrive versions the VIN is shown in the vehicle information or software screens.

Always check that the VIN on the car matches the V5C. If the plate, the door sticker and the logbook disagree, stop and ask questions before you go any further.

Full VIN vs last 7 characters

BMW dealers and parts systems often work with the last 7 characters of the VIN, and our decoder accepts that short VIN too. It is quick to type and usually enough to find the car.

The catch is that BMW reuses serial number blocks across different model lines, so the same last 7 characters can belong to more than one vehicle. When that happens, the decoder lists the matching full VINs so you can choose the right one. If you have the full 17-character VIN, use it: it identifies one car only and removes any doubt.

VIN decoder vs full BMW service history report

The free decode tells you what the car is: how it left the factory. The full report tells you what has happened to it since, based on records from the BMW dealer network. For £19, the BMW service history report includes:

  • Dealer service entries with dates
  • Recorded mileage entries in km
  • Repairs logged by BMW dealers
  • Key reads
  • Full factory equipment list with option codes
  • Vehicle identification details

The report is prepared after payment and sent to your email as a secure link. It covers BMW dealer service, repair and key-read history only; it is not a finance, write-off or MOT check. Content depends on the records available for each VIN. Order the BMW service history report, or read our guide on how to check BMW service history, including the free options in iDrive and at a BMW retailer.

Decode your VIN before a sat nav update or CarPlay activation

The VIN is also the key to the right sat nav update. It identifies which iDrive head unit your BMW or MINI has, for example CIC, NBT or NBT EVO (ID4, ID5 or ID6), and therefore which map family and activation method it needs.

Our BMW sat nav update and Apple CarPlay activation pages run their own VIN check and tell you whether your car is compatible before you order. Not sure which page you need? Get in touch with your VIN and we will point you in the right direction.

BMW VIN decoder FAQ

Is the BMW VIN decoder free?

Yes. Decoding a BMW or MINI VIN is free and you do not need an account. To keep the service fair there is a limited number of free checks per visitor in a given period. You only pay if you decide to order the full BMW service history report, which costs £19.

Can I decode a BMW VIN from the registration number?

No. The decoder works from the VIN itself, not the UK number plate. You will find the VIN on the V5C logbook, at the base of the windscreen and on the sticker in the door frame. Once you have it, enter the full 17 characters or the last 7.

Does the decoder work for MINI?

Yes. MINI is part of the BMW Group, and MINI VINs can be decoded in the same way as BMW VINs. How much data comes back depends on the individual vehicle and the records held for it.

Should I enter the full VIN or just the last 7 characters?

Both work, but the full 17-character VIN is best. The last 7 characters are usually enough, but because BMW reuses serial number blocks across different model lines, a short VIN can occasionally match more than one car. If that happens, the decoder lists the matching full VINs so you can pick the right one.

Does a BMW VIN check show the mileage?

The free decode tells you how many dealer service entries were found for the car, but the mileage itself stays hidden. The full report lists the recorded mileage entries in km, alongside dealer service visits, repairs and key reads.

What does a BMW VIN number tell you?

The first three characters identify the manufacturer (for example WBA for BMW cars or WMW for MINI), characters 4 to 9 describe the vehicle type, and the last eight identify the individual car. A decoder matches the VIN against BMW data to confirm the exact model, series, production date and factory equipment.

Is a BMW VIN decoder the same as a history check?

No. A decoder confirms what the car is and how it was built. A history check shows what has happened to it since: dealer servicing, repairs, key reads and recorded mileage. Our £19 report covers BMW dealer service history only; it is not a finance, write-off or MOT check.
