Which sat nav does the X1 E84 have?
The E84 was BMW’s first X1, a compact SUV sold from about 2009 to 2015 and facelifted in 2012. Where it has Navigation Professional, the answer is simple: it is CIC from the first cars to the last. The less predictable part is Business navigation, which may be one of two quite different units, and the many X1s that left the factory with no navigation at all:
| Unit | Typically fitted | Navigation | Can we update it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| CIC | Throughout the production run | Navigation Professional, larger screen | Yes: PREMIUM maps, £39.99 |
| M-ASK | May be fitted to earlier Business cars | Business navigation, DVD maps | No: older DVD-based map format |
| CIC Mid | May be fitted to later Business cars | Business navigation | Yes: MOTION maps, £39.99 |
| No navigation | Many X1s | Not fitted at the factory | No: there is no map to update |
The production years are approximate, and we deliberately give no date for the change from M-ASK to CIC Mid: “earlier” and “later” is as far as we can go without knowing the build of a particular car. We have found CIC, with the PREMIUM maps, on an E84 that we checked by VIN. For your own X1, the VIN check above reads the factory specification, so you do not need to guess.
Easier than ever
Which map does your X1 E84 need? Just type your VIN.
We have made it easier than ever to find the right map and confirm it is compatible with your navigation unit. Type your VIN into the search box at the top of this page and we will show the unit your car was built with, the map it needs and the price. Checking is free.
Telling the X1’s navigation units apart
Start with the screen and the controller. On the E84, the Navigation Professional screen is the larger of the two, and a CIC car has an iDrive controller with shortcut buttons around it. A Business car has the smaller screen, and that is where the doubt lies, because the screen alone does not tell you whether the unit behind it is M-ASK or CIC Mid.
If you cannot find a navigation menu at all, the car was probably one of the many X1s built without it. In every case the VIN check settles the question before you spend anything.
- Larger screen, Navigation Professional: CIC, PREMIUM maps
- Smaller screen, Business navigation: M-ASK or CIC Mid
- No navigation menu: nothing to update
- VIN check: the definitive answer
Business vs Professional navigation in the X1 E84
On the first X1, the choice between the two navigation levels matters more than the build year. A car with Navigation Professional has CIC whether it was built early or late, before or after the facelift, so the map is always PREMIUM at £39.99 with a typed code.
Business navigation is the option to look at more closely. Earlier Business cars may have M-ASK, whose DVD-based maps are outside what we offer. Later ones may have CIC Mid, and that unit is covered: it takes the MOTION maps, also £39.99 with a typed code. If you are looking at a used X1 described as having Business navigation, it is worth running the VIN before assuming the maps can be brought up to date.
How to update the maps in your X1 E84
Run the VIN check
We confirm the X1 has CIC or CIC Mid, not M-ASK, and show the latest map.
Order for £39.99
PREMIUM for CIC or MOTION for CIC Mid, with the installation guide.
Load a FAT32 stick
Format the USB stick as FAT32 and copy the map files across.
Enter the FSC code
Start the update in the car and type the code when the screen asks for it.
PREMIUM and MOTION are sold as East or West Europe. Choose the region you use most; either one still includes the main roads of the other. Both are activated with a typed code, and a Lifetime FSC code is included where your unit supports it, so later map versions cost nothing extra: email us when a new one comes out. Keep the X1 parked somewhere safe and open until the update has finished. Our BMW FSC code explained guide covers what the code actually unlocks.
Apple CarPlay in the X1 E84
CarPlay is not something the first X1 can have switched on. None of its units, CIC included, carry CarPlay in their software, and the E84 is not on our list for USB activation, so the only route is a hardware retrofit. To see what your current car offers, read does my BMW have Apple CarPlay?
After the E84: the X1 F48
The second-generation X1, the F48, moved to NBT EVO on Professional cars and EntryNav on Business cars. Those units belong to a different map family from CIC, so nothing you know about updating an E84 carries straight across. If you are changing from one X1 to the other, the BMW X1 F48 sat nav update guide explains what the newer car needs.
BMW E84 sat nav FAQ
Does my BMW X1 E84 have sat nav at all?
Not necessarily. Many first-generation X1s were sold without factory navigation, and a car without it has no map to update. If you are unsure, enter your VIN on this page: the check shows whether navigation was fitted at the factory and, if so, which unit.
Can the maps in an X1 with Navigation Professional be updated?
Yes. Navigation Professional in the E84 uses CIC throughout the production run, and CIC takes our PREMIUM maps for £39.99. You copy them to a FAT32 USB stick and activate them with an FSC code typed on the screen. You choose East or West Europe, and whichever you pick also carries the main roads of the other region.
My X1 has Business navigation. Can I still update it?
It depends on the unit behind it. Earlier Business cars may have M-ASK, which stores its maps in an older DVD-based format that we cannot update. Later ones may be fitted with CIC Mid, a unit we can update with the MOTION maps for £39.99 and a typed code. The two look like the same option on paper, so the VIN check is the way to find out which you have.
Did the 2012 facelift change the sat nav in the X1?
Not for Navigation Professional, which stayed on CIC from the start of production to the end. For Business navigation we only know that earlier cars may have M-ASK and later ones may have CIC Mid, and we would not use the facelift as the dividing line. Check the VIN of the car itself.
Can Apple CarPlay be switched on in an E84?
No. None of the units fitted to the first X1 have CarPlay in their software, and the E84 is not on our list for USB activation. Adding CarPlay to this car means a hardware retrofit.
