Which sat nav does the E87 have?
The first 1 Series was sold from about 2004 to 2013, with the E82 Coupé and E88 Convertible carrying on after the hatchbacks. Before asking which sat nav it has, it is worth asking whether it has one at all: navigation was an option on this car, not standard equipment. Cars that do have it were built with one of the units below, and only the later CIC can be updated from USB:
| Unit | Typically fitted | Navigation | Can we update it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| CCC | About 2004 to 2008 | Navigation Professional, DVD maps | No: older DVD map format |
| M-ASK | Cars with Business navigation | Business, smaller screen, DVD maps | No: older DVD map format |
| CIC | From around late 2008 | Navigation Professional | Yes: PREMIUM maps, £39.99 |
| CIC Mid | May be fitted to some later Business cars | Business navigation | Yes: MOTION maps, £39.99 |
These dates are approximate. The move to CIC followed the build date rather than the registration, and because the Coupé and Convertible stayed in production the longest, a late E82 or E88 with Navigation Professional is more likely to have it than an early hatchback. The VIN check above reads what your own car has, so there is no need to guess.
Easier than ever
Which map does your 1 Series need? Just type your VIN.
We have made it easier than ever to find the right map and confirm it is compatible with your navigation unit. Type your VIN into the search box at the top of this page and we will show the unit your car was built with, the map it needs and the price. Checking is free.
How to tell CCC from CIC in a 1 Series
If your 1 Series does have navigation, look at the iDrive controller. CIC arrived with a redesigned controller that has shortcut buttons around it; the older units go without them. If there is no navigation unit at all, there is nothing for a map update to install onto, and the VIN check will say so.
- Shortcut buttons around the controller: CIC
- No shortcut buttons: CCC or M-ASK
- No navigation option fitted: no map to update
- VIN check: the definitive answer
Business vs Professional navigation in the 1 Series
Because navigation was optional, many E81, E87, E82 and E88 cars have no factory sat nav. Those that do have one of two levels. Navigation Professional used CCC on earlier cars and CIC from around late 2008; only the CIC version takes our PREMIUM maps.
Business navigation has a smaller screen and uses M-ASK, which, like CCC, relies on an older DVD-based map format that we do not supply. Some later Business cars may have CIC Mid instead, and that unit can be updated with the MOTION maps. If your car has Business navigation, the VIN check tells you which of the two you have before you pay anything.
How to update the maps in your E87
Check the VIN
We confirm the car has CIC (or CIC Mid) and show the latest map version.
Pay £39.99
PREMIUM maps (MOTION for CIC Mid), a Lifetime FSC code where supported and the guide.
Prepare the USB
Format a stick as FAT32 and copy the map files as the guide shows.
Type the code
Start the update from the USB stick and enter the FSC code when the screen asks.
The PREMIUM maps come as East or West Europe: install the region you drive in most, and you still get the main roads of the other. Where your unit supports a Lifetime FSC code, later map versions cost nothing extra; just email us when you want one. Leave the car parked in a safe, open place while the update runs, and read BMW FSC code explained if you want to know what the code does.
Apple CarPlay in the E87
None of the navigation units used in this generation of the 1 Series include Apple CarPlay in their software, so there is nothing to switch on. The only way to add it is a hardware retrofit. USB CarPlay activation is for later BMWs with NBT EVO and Navigation Professional; does my BMW have Apple CarPlay? explains which cars those are.
The 1 Series after the E87
The next 1 Series is the F20, which has its own mix of navigation units. If you also have one of those, see the BMW F20 sat nav update guide, and BMW 1 Series Apple CarPlay for which F20s can have CarPlay activated.
BMW E87 sat nav FAQ
Does every BMW 1 Series E87 have sat nav?
No. Navigation was an optional extra on the first-generation 1 Series, so many E81, E87, E82 and E88 cars were built without it. A map update needs a factory navigation unit, so enter your VIN on this page first: the check tells you whether your car has one and which.
Which E87-generation cars can have their maps updated?
Cars with CIC navigation, which arrived with Navigation Professional from around late 2008. They take the PREMIUM maps for £39.99, activated with a typed FSC code. Earlier CCC cars and Business-navigation cars with M-ASK use an older DVD map format that we do not supply. Some later Business cars may have CIC Mid instead, which takes the MOTION maps.
How can I tell if my 1 Series has CIC?
Look at the iDrive controller. CIC brought a redesigned controller with shortcut buttons around it. If your controller does not have those buttons, the car most likely has one of the older DVD-based units. The VIN check confirms it either way.
Is an E82 Coupé or E88 Convertible more likely to have CIC?
Often, yes. The Coupé and Convertible stayed in production longer than the E81 and E87 hatchbacks, so more of them were built after CIC arrived around late 2008. That only applies to cars with Navigation Professional, though, and the switch depended on the build date, so check the VIN rather than going by body style or registration.
Can I get Apple CarPlay in an E87?
Not by activation. None of the navigation units in this generation include CarPlay in their software, so the only option is a hardware retrofit. USB CarPlay activation is for later BMWs with NBT EVO and Navigation Professional.
