The short answer
It depends on how old your BMW is. Recent models with over-the-air map updates get them free for a limited period, and the newest iDrive systems load maps from the BMW cloud. Most older BMWs do not have a free option: a map update for CIC, NBT and NBT EVO needs both the map files and an FSC activation code for your car, and the code is what you pay for.
- Newer BMWs: free over-the-air updates for a limited time
- iDrive OS 9: maps updated from the BMW cloud
- Older iDrive: map files plus a paid FSC code
- Free downloads alone will not unlock the maps

When BMW map updates are genuinely free
On cars with BMW Live Cockpit Plus or Professional and Operating System 7, 8 or 8.5, BMW UK provides over-the-air map updates ex factory for a limited time. The car downloads them through its built-in SIM, with no USB stick or dealer visit. When that period ends, BMW offers a paid one-year extension through the "Map Update" service or Connected Package Professional in the ConnectedDrive Store.
On the newest cars with Operating System 9, the navigation map is kept up to date in the BMW cloud and the car downloads the map data it needs.
Because the free period depends on the model, equipment and production date, the reliable way to check is the My BMW app or the ConnectedDrive Store, signed in with your car. A BMW UK retailer can also tell you.
Why older BMWs have no free option
Systems such as CIC, CHAMP2/Business, EntryNav, NBT and NBT EVO were built before over-the-air map updates, or have long passed any free period. They take a full map update from a USB stick, and the car only accepts it when it is activated with an FSC code (Freischaltcode) generated for your VIN and that map.
So even when the map files themselves are easy to find, the update is not really free: the FSC code is the part that has to be paid for, whether you buy it from BMW, from a dealer or from a specialist. We explain the code in detail in our BMW FSC code guide.
Free map downloads, torrents and code generators
Searching for a "BMW map update free download" brings up forum threads, torrents and code generators. They can look like a shortcut, but they cause most of the failed updates we get asked about:
- Wrong region or map version for the unit
- Incomplete files after a very large download
- "Navigation data incomplete or corrupted" errors
- Code tools that patch the head unit software
A map package is several gigabytes, so even a genuine file can be damaged in an unstable download. Unofficial tools that modify the head unit software change the car in ways BMW does not support. If something goes wrong, there is no one to help you put it right.
The cheapest safe way: DIY update with a Lifetime FSC code
For an older BMW, the lowest-cost route that still works properly is to install the update yourself from USB, with a code made for your car. This is how our service works:
Check your VIN
We identify the navigation unit, your current map and the latest version available.
Pay once
£39.99 for PREMIUM, MOVE, MOTION, ROUTE and NEXT, or £59.99 for LIVE, WAY, JOY and EVO.
Download
You receive the map download links, the FSC code or FSC file and the installation guide.
Install from USB
Copy the files to a USB stick and follow the guide in the car.
The code is a Lifetime FSC code, so future map versions are covered for the life of the car: when a new update comes out, email us and we send it at no extra cost. Our guide shows exactly how to prepare the USB stick for your unit, and our UK support team can help if anything is unclear.
Which BMWs need a paid update?
As a rule of thumb, any BMW without working over-the-air map updates needs the USB route. That covers the PREMIUM and MOTION maps on CIC, MOVE on CHAMP2/Business, ROUTE on EntryNav, NEXT on NBT, EVO on NBT EVO ID4 and ID5/6, WAY on EntryNav2 and LIVE on MGU once the free period has ended. Not sure which one you have? Enter your VIN above and we will tell you before you pay anything, or decode it first with our free BMW VIN check.
Free BMW map update FAQ
Can I update my BMW sat nav for free?
Sometimes. Newer BMWs with over-the-air map updates get them free for a limited period from new, and the newest iDrive systems load map data from the BMW cloud. Older systems such as CIC, NBT and NBT EVO need a paid map update and an FSC activation code, either from BMW or from a specialist like us.
Is there a free BMW map update download?
Map files do circulate online, but the files alone will not work. The navigation system only accepts a map version that is activated by an FSC code generated for your VIN and that map. Without a valid code the update is rejected or the maps will not unlock.
How do I know if my BMW still has free map updates?
Log in to the My BMW app or the BMW ConnectedDrive Store with your VIN, or ask a BMW UK retailer. BMW says the free over-the-air period depends on the model, equipment and production date, so the app is the reliable place to check.
What is the cheapest way to update an older BMW sat nav?
For CIC, NBT, NBT EVO, EntryNav and MGU units, a DIY USB update with a Lifetime FSC code is usually the cheapest safe route. With us it costs £39.99 for PREMIUM, MOVE, MOTION, ROUTE and NEXT maps, and £59.99 for LIVE, WAY, JOY and EVO.
What is the risk with torrent maps or code generators?
Files from unknown sources are often the wrong region or version, incomplete after a long download, or modified. The most common results are a failed install or the message that navigation data is incomplete or corrupted. Tools that patch the head unit software change the car in ways BMW does not support.
Do I need to pay again for future map updates?
Not with a Lifetime FSC code. It covers future map versions for the life of the car: when a new update is released, email us and we send it at no extra cost.
