It depends on the navigation system fitted at the factory, not just the model year:

Activation or retrofit: what's the difference?
Activation switches on CarPlay that the NBT EVO system already supports. Nothing is fitted to the car: you copy a file made for your VIN to a USB stick and follow the guide. A retrofit adds hardware, such as a new screen or an interface box behind the dash, to cars whose system cannot run CarPlay. Aftermarket CarPlay screens and interface boxes for BMWs of this era were listed at roughly £140 to £700 in October 2026, plus fitting.

Is it free from BMW?
If your 1 Series already shows Apple CarPlay in the phone menu, there is nothing to pay. For NBT EVO cars that left the factory without it, BMW UK sells Apple CarPlay Preparation in the ConnectedDrive Store, with the price shown after you sign in; it does not include FullScreen or Video in Motion. Does the BMW 1 Series have Apple CarPlay?
Some do. F20/F21 1 Series cars from about 2016 to 2020 with Navigation Professional and the NBT EVO system can have CarPlay activated. Earlier F20/F21 cars with CIC or NBT do not support it without a retrofit. The newer F40 1 Series, from 2019, normally has a later iDrive with CarPlay built in.
Can I add CarPlay to my F20 1 Series?
If it has NBT EVO with Navigation Professional, yes: CarPlay can be activated with a USB file from £49.99. If it has CIC or the older NBT, the option is a retrofit screen or interface box instead.
How do I know if my 1 Series has NBT EVO?
The quickest way is the VIN check on this page, which reads the head unit fitted to your car. As a rough guide, F20/F21 cars built from mid-2016 with Navigation Professional and the larger 8.8 inch screen usually have NBT EVO.
