Which sat nav does the X4 G02 have?
The second-generation X4, built from about 2018, is the coupé-styled sibling of the X3 G01, and it shares the X3's navigation story. With Navigation Professional, what you have depends on the build date: NBT EVO on the earliest cars, MGU with iDrive 7 after about mid-2019. Some cars were ordered with Business navigation, which uses EntryNav2:
| Navigation | Period | Unit | Maps |
|---|---|---|---|
| Professional | About 2018 to mid-2019 | NBT EVO (ID5/ID6) | EVO (FSC file, exFAT), £59.99 |
| Business | Some cars | EntryNav2 | WAY (FSC file), £59.99 |
| Professional | From about mid-2019 | MGU, iDrive 7 | LIVE (FSC file), £59.99; over the air while the subscription is active, USB after |
The mid-2019 changeover is approximate and went by production, not registration. An X4 on a 2019 plate may therefore have been built either side of it, and with only about a year of NBT EVO production, the early cars are easy to mistake for later ones.
Easier than ever
Which map does your X4 G02 need? Just type your VIN.
We have made it easier than ever to find the right map and confirm it is compatible with your navigation unit. Type your VIN into the search box at the top of this page and we will show the unit your car was built with, the map it needs and the price. Checking is free.
Early or late X4: how to tell which you have
Because the G02 spent so little time on the earlier unit, any X4 built around 2019 sits close to the changeover, and a buyer or new owner can easily assume the wrong unit. The difference is more than cosmetic. With NBT EVO, the X4 needs the EVO maps and, provided it has Navigation Professional, is the only kind of G02 that can have CarPlay switched on by USB. An iDrive 7 car takes the LIVE maps, gets them over the air while its map update subscription or free period is active, and needs a USB update only once that has ended.
The model year on an advert, or the date on the logbook, will not settle it. The factory build data does, and that is what the VIN check reads.
- Built before about mid-2019, Professional: NBT EVO, EVO maps
- Built from about mid-2019, Professional: iDrive 7, LIVE maps
- Business navigation: EntryNav2, WAY maps
- CarPlay activation: NBT EVO Professional cars only
Business EntryNav2 vs Professional in the X4
Not every G02 has Navigation Professional. Some have Business navigation, built around the EntryNav2 unit, and for those the mid-2019 changeover is not the dividing line: an EntryNav2 car takes the WAY maps. Each unit has its own map family, so an X4 with Business navigation cannot use the EVO or LIVE packages, and a Professional car cannot use WAY. Business cars are also outside our CarPlay activation, which needs NBT EVO with Navigation Professional. Not sure which navigation was specified? Your VIN answers that too.
How to update the maps in your X4 G02
Find your unit
The VIN check shows whether your X4 has NBT EVO, EntryNav2 or iDrive 7.
Order the matching maps
EVO, WAY or LIVE, each £59.99, with an FSC file for your VIN.
Copy to exFAT
Put the maps and the FSC file on the stick in the layout the guide gives.
Install in the X4
Plug in the stick, accept the prompt and let the update run to the end.
Every G02 unit is activated by an FSC file rather than a code you type, and every package covers Europe in one go, so the only real decision is which of the three map families to order. On an iDrive 7 car, check the My BMW app first: if the over-the-air period is still active, you may not need a USB update yet. Keep the FSC file's name unchanged, and keep the X4 parked somewhere safe and open until the screen reports that the update has finished. For background on activation, read BMW FSC code explained.
Apple CarPlay in the X4 G02
CarPlay is where the early and late X4s differ most, and among standard X4s only the early ones need anything doing. Our USB CarPlay activation works on an X4 that has NBT EVO ID5/ID6 together with Navigation Professional. The compatible list names 2017 to 2019 X4 F26/G02, and because the G02 arrived in about 2018, that points to G02s from about 2018 to 2019. The X4 M F98 is listed separately, for 2019 to 2020 cars. Activation costs from £49.99, with FullScreen (£10) and Video in Motion (£10) as optional extras.
A later X4 on iDrive 7 normally has CarPlay built in, so there is nothing to activate. An X4 with Business navigation (EntryNav2) cannot take the USB activation at all. If you are comparing other BMWs, does my BMW have Apple CarPlay? covers the wider range.
The X3 alongside it, and the X4 before
The G02 is closely related to the X3 G01, where the same switch from NBT EVO to iDrive 7 took place, so the X3 guide is useful background if you run both. The first-generation X4 F26 is a different case, with older units and in some cases typed codes rather than FSC files, so follow its own guide for an earlier X4.
BMW X4 G02 sat nav FAQ
My X4 G02 was first registered in 2019. Which map does it take?
Two things decide it: the build date, and whether the car has Professional or Business navigation. A Professional X4 built before about mid-2019 has NBT EVO and takes the EVO maps; one built after the change has iDrive 7 and takes the LIVE maps. A 2019 registration can fall on either side, and a Business car takes WAY instead, so run the VIN before ordering.
Which X4 G02 cars can have Apple CarPlay activated by USB?
For the standard X4, only the early ones, and only with the right equipment: the car needs NBT EVO ID5/ID6 plus Navigation Professional. The compatible list says 2017 to 2019 X4 F26/G02, which for the G02 means cars from about 2018 to 2019. A later iDrive 7 X4 normally has CarPlay built in already, and a car with Business navigation cannot be activated.
Is the X4 M (F98) covered for maps and CarPlay?
The X4 M F98 appears on our CarPlay compatible list for 2019 to 2020 cars. As with any X4, the map and the activation depend on the unit actually fitted, so enter the VIN of the car and we will confirm both before you buy.
Will an X4 take the same map as an X3 G01 of the same age?
Usually the same family, because the two are closely related and went through the same change of unit. That said, the map follows the unit in the individual car, not the model badge, so an X3 and an X4 built a few months apart can still need different packages.
My X4 has Business navigation. What do I order?
Business cars have EntryNav2 in place of the Professional units, and that takes the WAY maps: £59.99, one package for Europe, activated by an FSC file supplied for your VIN and installed from an exFAT USB stick. The VIN check confirms EntryNav2 before you pay.
