Which sat nav does the X5 G05 have?
The G05 is a large SUV that tends to cover long distances, often fully loaded on family trips, so out-of-date maps show up quickly as missing roads and odd detours. The good news is that working out its sat nav is simple. Since launch it has used BMW's MGU unit with iDrive 7, and most UK cars pair it with BMW Live Cockpit Professional. Only the facelift brought a change:
| Period | Unit | Usual cockpit | Maps |
|---|---|---|---|
| From launch (about 2018) | MGU, iDrive 7 | Live Cockpit Professional on most UK cars | LIVE (FSC file, exFAT), £59.99 |
| From the facelift (about 2023) | Newer iDrive (iDrive 8 or 8.5, as far as we know) | Confirm by VIN | The VIN check confirms whether a USB update applies |
Treat both dates as rough markers. Which side of the facelift an X5 sits on depends on when it was built, and a car can reach its first registration some months after leaving the factory, so the year on the V5C is not a dependable guide on its own.

We have made it easier than ever to find the right map and confirm it is compatible with your navigation unit. Type your VIN into the search box at the top of this page and we will show the unit your car was built with, the map it needs and the price. Checking is free.
Is your over-the-air map period still running?
For an iDrive 7 X5, this is the question that decides everything. While the car's map update subscription or free period is active, new maps arrive over the air and you do not need to buy anything. When it ends, the downloads stop. From then on, current maps come by USB update: the LIVE package plus an FSC file tied to your VIN.
To see where yours stands, open the My BMW app or sign in to the BMW ConnectedDrive Store with the car. If you bought the X5 used, check this early on rather than assuming a previous owner's subscription is still in place. Facelifted cars, from about 2023, run a newer iDrive, so for those let the VIN check confirm the method first. Weighing up BMW's own route against doing it yourself? - Period running: maps arrive over the air
- Period ended: LIVE maps by USB, £59.99
- Activation: FSC file for your VIN, no code
- Facelift (about 2023): VIN check first
Live Cockpit Professional in the X5
Most UK G05s were built with BMW Live Cockpit Professional, which on the pre-facelift cars is the iDrive 7 setup running on the MGU unit. When it comes to maps, though, the name of the cockpit package is less important than the unit behind it: an MGU car takes the LIVE maps. "Most" is not "all", and a car first sold outside the UK may be specified differently, so we confirm the unit from the VIN rather than from the trim badge.
How to update the maps in your X5
Check the app
See in My BMW or the ConnectedDrive Store whether over-the-air updates have stopped.
Run your VIN
We confirm the iDrive unit, then you order the LIVE maps for £59.99.
Prepare an exFAT stick
Transfer the maps and FSC file using the folder layout set out in the guide.
Install in the X5
With the car parked, insert the stick and follow the prompts until it finishes.
LIVE is one Europe-wide package, which suits an X5 that heads abroad on holiday. No code is entered on screen: the car activates the maps from the FSC file it finds on the stick, provided the file name is left exactly as supplied. Choose a safe, open spot to park until the installation is complete. How FSC files work is covered in BMW FSC code explained.
Apple CarPlay in the X5 G05
On iDrive 7 X5s, CarPlay is normally built in. That puts the G05 outside our USB CarPlay activation, which is a separate product for older NBT EVO cars. If CarPlay is missing from your X5, the My BMW app is the place to look first. For how CarPlay varies across other BMWs, see does my BMW have Apple CarPlay?
The X5 before the G05, and its relatives
The F15 X5 that came before used NBT and later NBT EVO, with a different map for each, so if you own or are buying an earlier X5, the F15 guide is the one to follow. The G06 X6 is the coupé-styled sister model of the G05, and the seven-seat X7 G07 shares much with it too. And if you also have a 3 Series of the same era, the G20 guide covers the same iDrive 7 situation: over the air while the period runs, then USB.
BMW X5 G05 sat nav FAQ
Where do I check whether my X5 still gets maps over the air?
In the My BMW app or the BMW ConnectedDrive Store, signed in with your car. Either one shows whether the map update subscription or free period is still running. If it is, the X5 looks after its own maps and there is nothing to order yet.
The over-the-air period on my X5 has ended. What are my options?
On an iDrive 7 X5, the maps can still be kept current by USB. You order the LIVE maps, which come with an FSC file generated for your VIN, copy them to an exFAT stick and install them in the car. It costs £59.99 and covers Europe in one package.
Can a facelifted X5 from 2023 onwards be updated by USB?
The facelift of about 2023 brought a newer iDrive generation, which as far as we know is iDrive 8 or 8.5, and we do not assume the iDrive 7 method carries over. Run its VIN through the check above first: it confirms whether that particular car can take a USB map update, and you only pay once that is clear.
Does an X5 M (F95) or an X5 45e take a different map?
Both belong to the G05 family, so the same split by build period applies: LIVE maps for the iDrive 7 cars, and a VIN check for anything built after the facelift. Running the VIN of the actual car is the quickest way to be sure.
My X5 does not show Apple CarPlay. Can you activate it by USB?
No. CarPlay is normally built in on iDrive 7 X5s, and our USB activation is a separate product for older NBT EVO systems, not for the G05. If it is missing from your car, look in the My BMW app first.
