The VIN of your X7 shows which side of the 2022 facelift it was built on, the map version loaded now and whether there is a newer release. Checking costs nothing.

Which sat nav does the X7 G07 have?

The X7 is BMW's largest SUV, with seven seats, and it arrived in about 2019 as a new model line with no earlier X7 to follow on from. Its navigation history is correspondingly short: two systems, divided by the facelift of about 2022.

Read both years as approximate. The switch followed the production line, so the build date is what counts, and an X7 from around 2022 is best checked by VIN rather than judged by its registration year.

Easier than ever

Which map does your X7 need? Just type your VIN.

We have made it easier than ever to find the right map and confirm it is compatible with your navigation unit. Type your VIN into the search box at the top of this page and we will show the unit your car was built with, the map it needs and the price. Checking is free.

Before and after 2022: how the X7 sat nav changed

On pre-facelift cars, the MGU unit runs iDrive 7 and takes the LIVE maps, while some later MGU units use the JOY map family instead. Our VIN lookups show iDrive 7 cars use the LIVE maps, with a few later units on JOY, and the check tells you which one your X7 needs. The X7 changed system a year or so earlier than the X6 G06, which kept iDrive 7 until about 2023.

After the facelift of about 2022, the X7 generally has iDrive 8, which you can recognise by its curved display. On cars with the newer iDrive 8, the VIN check tells you whether we can supply a USB update for your unit. If it cannot be confirmed automatically, we tell you before you pay anything.

  • Pre-facelift X7 (about 2019 to 2022): iDrive 7
  • Its map: LIVE, unless the unit is a later JOY one
  • Curved display fitted: check the VIN before ordering
  • iDrive 7 activation: FSC file, no code to type

Over-the-air maps on the X7: checking where you stand

So long as the map update subscription or free period remains active, an iDrive 7 X7 is kept up to date over the air and you have nothing to buy. The status is shown in the My BMW app and in the BMW ConnectedDrive Store. If more than one BMW is linked to your account, make sure you are looking at the X7.

When the period ends, the over-the-air downloads stop and the maps no longer move on by themselves. After that, they are brought up to date by USB with an FSC file, using LIVE or JOY maps prepared for the VIN of your X7. On a facelifted car with iDrive 8, start with the VIN check instead. How to update the maps in your X7

1

Check the over-the-air status

If the app says the X7 is still covered, you can stop here for now.

2

Run the VIN check

We confirm the unit and the map family: LIVE, or JOY on some later units.

3

Order and download

£59.99 for the maps, with the FSC activation made for the VIN of your X7.

4

Install from USB

Copy the files to the stick, park up somewhere safe and let the X7 run the installation.

For LIVE, the maps come with an FSC file and go on an exFAT stick. For JOY, the FSC files come as a ZIP archive and belong in a folder named FSC on the stick; the installation guide shows the exact layout for both. LIVE is one Europe-wide package, so you do not pick a region. Keep every file name exactly as supplied. To understand how the FSC file ties the maps to one car, read BMW FSC code explained.

Apple CarPlay in the X7

An X7 normally has CarPlay built in, on iDrive 7 and iDrive 8 cars alike. What we sell as USB CarPlay activation is aimed at earlier NBT EVO cars on our compatible list, and the G07 is not one of them. Should CarPlay fail to appear, start with the My BMW app. For a model-by-model view, including older BMWs that lack it, see does my BMW have Apple CarPlay?

No earlier X7, but two close relatives

There was no X7 before the G07, so there is no older generation to compare it with. The closest relative is the X5 G05, which shares much with the X7; its guide covers over-the-air and USB updates from the X5 side. At the top of the range the X7 sits alongside the 7 Series G11. If you have one of those too, note that 2015 to 2019 G11 and G12 cars are on our CarPlay activation list, which the X7 has no need for.

BMW X7 G07 sat nav FAQ

My X7 has a curved display. Can its maps be updated by USB?

A curved display generally means the X7 was built after the facelift of about 2022 and has iDrive 8. On cars with the newer iDrive 8, the VIN check tells you whether we can supply a USB update for your unit. If it cannot be confirmed automatically, we tell you before you pay anything.

How do I tell whether my X7 has iDrive 7?

X7s built from the launch in about 2019 up to the facelift of about 2022 have the MGU unit running iDrive 7. A car built close to the changeover is the one to check by VIN, because a registration date can come some time after the build date and does not settle it.

How will I know when my X7 stops getting maps over the air?

The My BMW app and the BMW ConnectedDrive Store both show the status of the map update subscription or free period. While it is active, the X7 downloads new maps by itself. After it ends, those downloads stop, and a USB update with an FSC file is how the maps stay current: LIVE, or JOY on some later units, at £59.99 for iDrive 7 cars.

Is updating an X7 the same as updating an X5 G05?

Largely, for iDrive 7 cars. The X7 shares much with the X5 G05, and an iDrive 7 car of either model takes the LIVE maps (or JOY on some later units) by USB once over-the-air updates have ended. Where the X7 differs is timing: its facelift, and the move to iDrive 8, came in about 2022. Run the VIN of the actual car rather than going by the model name.

Does a JOY map mean my X7 has iDrive 8?

No. JOY is a map family used by some later MGU units, and MGU is the iDrive 7 unit. It costs £59.99, the same as LIVE, and comes as a ZIP archive of FSC files that go in a folder named FSC on the USB stick. iDrive 8 cars are a separate case, which the VIN check confirms unit by unit.
