Which sat nav does the X3 F25 have?
The second-generation X3 was on sale for about seven years, and its navigation changed twice along the way: once on cars with Navigation Professional and once on cars with the simpler Business navigation. That gives the F25 more possible units than most BMWs of the period, and each one takes its own map package:
| Unit | Typically fitted | Navigation | Map to order |
|---|---|---|---|
| CIC | About 2010 to 2013 | Navigation Professional | PREMIUM (typed FSC code) |
| NBT | About 2013 to 2017 | Navigation Professional | NEXT (typed FSC code) |
| CIC Mid or CHAMP2 | Earlier Business cars | Business navigation | MOTION or MOVE (typed FSC code) |
| EntryNav | Later Business cars | Business navigation | ROUTE (typed FSC code) |
Treat those years as rough guides, because the changes came in by build date rather than on a fixed day. A small number of the very last F25s may also have NBT EVO, which takes the EVO maps. Our VIN lookups have found EntryNav on an F25, which is a reminder that a Business X3 is not always the older unit people expect. The VIN check above reads what is actually fitted to your car.

How the X3's navigation changed over the years
Think of the F25 as two separate timelines running side by side. On the Professional side, early cars have CIC with the PREMIUM maps, and from about 2013 BMW fitted the newer NBT, which uses the NEXT maps. On the Business side, earlier cars may have CIC Mid or CHAMP2, and later cars have EntryNav with the ROUTE maps.
Because the Professional changeover came around 2013, a year before the facelift, and the Business change is only known as earlier versus later cars, the year on the logbook only narrows it down. Knowing whether your X3 has Professional or Business navigation, plus a rough build date, gets you close; the VIN check settles it.
- Professional, about 2010 to 2013: CIC, PREMIUM maps
- Professional, about 2013 to 2017: NBT, NEXT maps
- Business, earlier cars: CIC Mid or CHAMP2, MOTION or MOVE maps
- Business, later cars: EntryNav, ROUTE maps
Business vs Professional navigation in the X3 F25
Two X3s of the same age can need completely different map packages simply because of the navigation option ticked when they were ordered. Navigation Professional cars have CIC or NBT and take PREMIUM or NEXT. Business cars have their own, simpler units, and those changed during production too, so a Business X3 can need MOTION, MOVE or ROUTE.
None of these packages will install on another unit, so a map bought for a Professional X3 is no use in a Business one, and vice versa. If you're buying a used X3 and don't know which navigation it left the factory with, the VIN check answers that as well.
How to update the maps in your X3
Check the VIN
We confirm the unit in your X3 and the latest map version for it.
Pay £39.99
The map files, a Lifetime FSC code where your unit supports it, and the installation guide.
Prepare the USB
Format a stick as FAT32 and copy the map files across as the guide shows.
Install and enter the code
Plug the stick into the car, follow the prompts and type the FSC code on screen when asked.
CIC, NBT, CIC Mid, CHAMP2 and EntryNav all use a typed FSC code and a FAT32 stick. You choose one region, East or West Europe, and each includes the main roads of the other. If the VIN check shows one of the rare late X3s with NBT EVO, the EVO maps are £59.99 and the guide covers the USB format and activation for that unit. Leave the X3 parked somewhere safe and open while it installs. For how the activation code is tied to your car, see BMW FSC code explained.
Apple CarPlay in the X3 F25
For nearly all F25s, CarPlay is a hardware retrofit job rather than a software switch: CarPlay simply isn't part of the CIC or NBT software, so there is nothing to activate. The exception may be a small number of the last X3s built with NBT EVO. If yours is a late car, the VIN check tells you whether it can be activated; our Apple CarPlay activation page explains how that works. The X3 after the F25
The F25 was replaced by the G01 X3, which moved to NBT EVO and later to iDrive 7. Those systems use different map families from the F25's units, so if you are comparing an F25 with a newer X3, expect a different map package and a different update process. Whichever X3 you have, the VIN check identifies the unit and the right map.
The X4 F26 was built on the F25 but arrived after BMW had moved to NBT, so its units differ: see the BMW F26 sat nav update guide.
BMW X3 F25 sat nav FAQ
My X3 F25 has Business navigation. Which map do I need?
It depends on when your X3 was built. Earlier Business cars may have CIC Mid or CHAMP2, which take the MOTION or MOVE maps, while later ones have EntryNav, which takes the ROUTE maps. All three cost £39.99 with us and use a typed FSC code, but the packages are not interchangeable, so run the VIN check before you order.
Did the 2014 facelift change the sat nav in the X3?
Not in a way you can rely on. On Professional cars the move from CIC to NBT came around 2013, so an X3 built before the 2014 facelift can have either unit. The facelift is not a safe guide to which map you need; the VIN check is.
How much does an X3 F25 map update cost?
For almost every F25 it is £39.99: PREMIUM for CIC, NEXT for NBT, MOTION for CIC Mid, MOVE for CHAMP2 and ROUTE for EntryNav. If the VIN check shows one of the few late cars that may have NBT EVO, the EVO maps are £59.99. Each comes with a Lifetime FSC code where your unit supports it.
Can my X3 F25 get Apple CarPlay without a retrofit?
Most F25s cannot, because CarPlay is not part of the CIC or NBT software, so those cars need a hardware retrofit. A small number of the last F25s may have NBT EVO instead, and for those the VIN check tells you whether CarPlay can be activated.
Do I have to buy both East and West Europe for my X3?
No. The map families used in the F25 come as East or West Europe, and you install one of them. Each includes the main roads of the other, so you still have the major routes across the rest of Europe.
