Which sat nav does the E60 have?
The E60 5 Series was built from about 2003 to 2010, with a facelift in 2007, and it sits right on the boundary between two generations of BMW navigation. For most of its production run, Navigation Professional meant the DVD-based CCC. Only the later facelifted cars, from around late 2008, received CIC. Cars ordered with the smaller Business navigation have M-ASK. For an E60 owner, that makes the first question simply whether your car is one of the later ones:
| Unit | Typically fitted | Navigation | Can we update it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| CCC | About 2003 to 2008 | Navigation Professional, maps on DVD | No: we do not supply its DVD map format |
| M-ASK | Cars with Business navigation | Business, smaller screen, maps on DVD | No: we do not supply its DVD map format |
| CIC | From around late 2008 | Navigation Professional, redesigned iDrive | Yes: PREMIUM maps, £39.99 |
These dates are approximate. The 2007 facelift changed the look of the car well before CIC arrived, so a facelifted E60 or E61 is not automatically a CIC car. It is the build date that counts, not the year on the registration plate.
Easier than ever
Which map does your E60 need? Just type your VIN.
We have made it easier than ever to find the right map and confirm it is compatible with your navigation unit. Type your VIN into the search box at the top of this page and we will show the unit your car was built with, the map it needs and the price. Checking is free.
Spotting CIC in an E60 or E61
You can usually answer the question from the driver's seat. When CIC arrived it brought a redesigned iDrive controller with shortcut buttons for Menu, Back and Option arranged around it, together with a set of programmable favourite buttons. A CCC car has a plainer controller without that cluster of buttons. Because the facelift and the change to CIC did not happen at the same time, these buttons are a more useful clue than whether your car has the facelift styling.
- Menu, Back and Option buttons by the controller: CIC
- Plainer controller without the shortcut buttons: CCC
- Smaller screen, Business navigation: M-ASK
- Not sure? The VIN check confirms it
Business vs Professional navigation in the E60
With Navigation Professional, an E60 has either CCC or CIC depending on when it was built, and only the CIC cars can take our maps. The alternative was Business navigation, which in the E60 uses the M-ASK unit with a smaller screen. Like CCC, M-ASK reads its maps from a DVD, and that format is not one we supply, so a Business-navigation E60 is not a car we can update. If you are not sure which navigation your car was ordered with, the VIN check shows it before you pay anything.
How to update the maps in your E60
Confirm it is CIC
The VIN check shows whether your E60 or E61 has CIC and the latest map for it.
Order PREMIUM
£39.99 for the maps, a Lifetime FSC code where supported and the guide.
Load a USB stick
Format it as FAT32 and copy the files across in the layout the guide sets out.
Enter the code
Run the update in the car and type the FSC code on screen when it asks.
PREMIUM comes as an East or a West Europe package. Pick the one that covers most of your driving; it still includes the main roads of the other. Keep the car parked somewhere safe and open while the update runs. If you would like to know what the code actually does, see BMW FSC code explained.
Apple CarPlay in the E60
None of the units fitted to the E60, whether CCC, M-ASK or CIC, has Apple CarPlay in its software, so there is nothing to switch on. If you want CarPlay in an E60 or E61, the only route is a hardware retrofit module. USB activation is for much later BMWs with NBT EVO ID5/ID6; see does my BMW have Apple CarPlay? to check which cars that covers.
The 5 Series after the E60
The E60 and E61 were replaced by the F10 generation, which began with CIC and later moved to NBT, so F10s with factory navigation can take a USB map update. If you have moved on to one, or are thinking about it, see the BMW F10 sat nav update guide.
BMW E60 sat nav FAQ
My E60 is a facelift model. Does that mean it has CIC?
Not necessarily. The E60 was facelifted in 2007, but CIC only arrived in the later production of the facelifted car, from around late 2008. Plenty of facelift E60s and E61s therefore still have CCC. The shortcut buttons around the iDrive controller are a good clue, and the VIN check gives the definite answer.
Is there a map update for an E60 with CCC?
Not from us. CCC reads its maps from a DVD, and that older map format is not one we supply. Our USB map updates are for E60s and E61s with CIC, which take the PREMIUM maps.
My E60 has the smaller sat nav screen. Can it be updated?
A smaller screen usually means Business navigation, which in the E60 is the M-ASK unit. M-ASK is DVD-based like CCC, so it is not something we can update. Run the VIN check to confirm what is fitted before ruling it out.
Is the update the same for the E61 Touring as for the saloon?
Yes. The E60 saloon and the E61 Touring were built with the same navigation units over the same period, so what matters is whether your car has CIC, not the body style. A CIC Touring takes the same PREMIUM maps and FSC code process as a CIC saloon.
Will I have to pay again when the next map version comes out?
Where your unit supports it, the FSC code we supply is a Lifetime code, so future map versions come at no extra cost. When a new version is out, email us and we will send it over.
