USB activation vs retrofit: costs compared
If your F30 has NBT EVO, CarPlay is already supported by the system and only needs switching on. A retrofit would mean paying for hardware you don't need.

BMW 4 Series (F32, F33, F36)
The 4 Series Coupé, Convertible and Gran Coupé share the 3 Series electronics. Cars from about 2017 to 2020 with Navigation Professional and NBT EVO can have CarPlay activated by USB in exactly the same way, while earlier cars with NBT need a retrofit. The M3 and M4 (F80, F82, F83) from about 2017 to 2020 are covered too.

Does the BMW F30 have Apple CarPlay?
Later F30, F31 and F34 3 Series cars with Navigation Professional and the NBT EVO system (roughly 2017 to 2019) support CarPlay and can have it activated if it is not already on. Earlier F30s with CIC or NBT do not support it without a retrofit.
How much does it cost to add CarPlay to an F30?
On an NBT EVO car, USB activation costs from £49.99, plus £10 each for FullScreen and Video in Motion. On a CIC or NBT car you need a retrofit screen or interface box; these were listed at roughly £140 to £700 in October 2026, plus fitting.
Is F30 CarPlay activation the same as on the 4 Series?
Yes. The F32, F33 and F36 4 Series from about 2017 to 2020 with Navigation Professional use the same NBT EVO system, so the same USB activation applies. Earlier 4 Series with NBT need a retrofit.
Do I need an ENET cable or laptop?
Not for the USB route. You copy a file made for your VIN to a USB stick and follow the guide in the car. A small number of compatible units cannot use the USB route; for those it can still be done with a laptop and an ENET cable, and we tell you what to do.
How do I know which system my F30 has?
